A Monster Calls director Sally Cookson explains how the story's monstrous tree was created on stage

To celebrate the news that Sally Cookson’s A Monster Calls will be streamed online by The Old Vic in June, we’ve been taking a look back at some of the videos we shared ahead of the show’s run in Coventry earlier this year.

One of the biggest challenges in bringing the story to the stage was working out how to create the monstrous tree that visits Conor in his nightmares. For this week’s Weducation video, director Sally Cookson explains how experimenting with a range of different techniques eventually resulted in the use of ropes throughout the production.

Watch the video below and think about the different techniques the company tried. If you were planning a production of A Monster Calls, how would you go about creating a tree or a monster? Share your ideas with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
